DEMOCRITUS UNIVERSITY OF THRACE

The Democritus University of Thrace was established by Legislative Decree no. 87 on July 27, 1973, and began its operation in the academic year 1974-1975 with the admission of students to the Departments of Civil Engineering in Xanthi and Law in Komotini.

It was named “Democritus” in honor of the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus, who came from Abdera in Xanthi.

The University’s administrative unit is in Komotini, capital of the Administrative Region of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace. Administrative services are provided in all four cities hosting its campuses, mainly in Xanthi and Komotini, as well as Alexandroupolis and Orestiada.

The Democritus University of Thrace is among the largest Universities in the country in terms of active student population. It is developed geographically throughout Thrace, with 8 schools, 20 departments, and a variety of postgraduate programs, with a population of approximately 29,000 students (undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral candidates) and with a research and teaching faculty of more than 700 people.
