AROMATIC PLANTS & HERBS

The visitor of the Region of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace can enjoy many aromatic plants and herbs such as oregano, St. John’s wort, mint and wild celery, sage, marjoram, chamomile, thyme, achillea millefolium, linden, and other native herbs, as well as aromatic crops, such as lavender, with a high content of essential oils.

The wealth of the natural environment of the prefectures of the Region is among the most significant in Europe. Virgin forests, mountains, and valleys compose an ideal environment for the growth of herbs for medicinal use and aromatic plants.

The unexploited biodiversity, with the vast number of species with interesting ingredients and high yields in essential oils, has attracted the interest of scientists. The Democritus University of Thrace is already recording the species and their composition, acknowledging that they represent one of the many authentic treasures of the earth, especially of Thrace.
