LEGUMES

Legumes, such as beans, fava beans, chickpeas, and lentils, are among the dynamic crops in the Region of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace. Among the most recognizable, sought-after in Greece and abroad, and certified as Protected Geographical Indication – PGI products are the Giant/Elephant beans of Nevrokopi and the medium-sized beans of Nevrokopi.
Legumes are linked to Greece’s tradition and gastronomic culture and are included in the Mediterranean Diet recognized as the healthiest diet.
They contain a high percentage of protein, iron, and fibers and zero cholesterol.
They are also famous for the significant quantities of minerals such as potassium, zinc, magnesium, and calcium.
The microclimate and soil composition of many areas in the Region contribute to the production of excellent quality. In particular, bean cultivation in the Region of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace represents 12.7 % of the total area of bean cultivation in Greece and about 15 % of the domestic production. The largest production volume is concentrated in the Regional Unit of Kavala, where 70% of the Region’s total area is cultivated, followed by the Regional Unit of Drama.
