BEEKEEPING PRODUCTS

The beekeeping products of the Region of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace are famous for their high quality, excellent taste, aroma, and density. The particular quality of honey is due to the rich biodiversity in plant species, with a significant percentage of endemic plants and appropriate climatic conditions.
Approximately 5,000 tons of traditional natural honey are produced in the Region, without any processing, from the total 17,000 tons produced in Greece. Healthy honey with great biological properties. Several local beekeeping products have won awards in international competitions, thanks to their quality due to the impressive biodiversity of the area with its hundreds of plant species.
In Samothrace, where more than 1,440 species of plants grow, i.e. at least 23% of the Greek flora, a type of honey and propolis are produced, which are among the top worldwide for their biofunctional properties. The honey of Thassos is also famous, while the Regional Unit of Kavala produces about 30% of the total honey production of the Region.
Thanks to the continuous development of the business sector in the Region, the first beekeeping park was created in Greece in the prefecture of Evros, in the area Kotronia of the Dadia National Park. The Park is expected to enhance the identity of local beekeeping products.
